The ancestral home of the O’Driscoll clan is the most accessible island in Ireland, a mere ten minutes by ferry from the fishing port of Baltimore. Sherkin Island has the feel of a remote hideaway, with the added bonus of a more moderate climate.
Sherkin’s spectacular views and landscapes have been attracting artists to the island from far and wide for years. It even offers a Visual Arts Degree Programme and works of art by the local artists are sold at the Island’s Craft Centre in Baltimore.
The area boasts a wonderful array of landscapes, Atlantic views from the hilltops, fuchsia-scented byways and the finest sandy beaches. The views across Roaringwater Bay towards the many small islands dotted there are stunning, with otters and porpoises playing in the bay. The island also has the ruins of a 15th Century Franciscan Abbey for you to explore.
The island is host to a variety of annual events, including the Community Fundraising Regatta, art exhibitions, theatre productions, fun runs and swimming events.
